FAA L867 · Elevated, Non-Load-Bearing Base Cans

Most Repairs Fast Enough
for a Pullback Operation.

Skip cutting threads. Skip the shovel. Typical repairs done in 5 minutes.

Best case: it fits inside a routine pullback window. Worst case: even a full closure skips the shovel, the digging around the can, and the re-terminated wiring — just the nut plate and a few minutes.

Stripped Bolt Hole Repair for L867 Base Cans

Elevated doesn't mean easy to fix

L867 bases carry elevated fixtures like L861 and L862 runway edge lights and L804 runway guard lights. They may not bear aircraft tire loads directly, but a stripped mounting hole still means a truck roll, tools, and time on an active airfield.

The traditional fix

  • Drill, ream, and tap the damaged hole on-site
  • Install a threaded insert, then re-torque
  • Or pull the can entirely — disconnect, re-terminate, re-test the circuit
  • Extended circuit downtime either way

The nut plate system

  • Captive nut plate seats into the existing L867 flange
  • No cutting threads, no re-tapping, no full machining setup on active pavement
  • No wiring disconnect — no re-termination, no re-test
  • One technician, about 5 minutes, done

If a bolt has sheared off inside the tapped hole, drilling out the stub may still be required — the nut plate system eliminates the re-tapping and can replacement that would otherwise follow, not the stub removal itself.
Whether a repair can be performed during a pullback operation versus requiring a full closure depends on each airport's own operations policy.

Compliance & Materials

FL PE approved for L867 / L868 base cans

The nut plate repair device is approved by a Florida-licensed Professional Engineer as a structural repair for L-867 and L-868 airfield light base cans.1

1 Component-level PE structural certification per generally accepted engineering principles and FAA EB-83A bolted-joint methodology. Full FAA AC 150/5345-53D equipment certification testing is not applicable, as that program governs complete base can assemblies rather than discrete repair components.
